WITH: 17 Additional Documents Concerning the Genealogy, Heraldry and History of the family Van den Brande and many related families, mostly from Zeeland, especially Van der Graaf, Van der Dussen, Bosschaert, Persijn, De Vos, Honich, De Meyer, Borselen van der Hooge and De Witte van Blois, including a signed letter from Mattheus SMALLEGANGE. [mostly near Middelburg (Kleverskerke?) in Zeeland], ca. 1625-ca. 1716 (with additions to 1736). 1 volume plus 17 loose documents. Folio (40.5 x 26.5 cm) and various formats. With about 250 depictions of about 50 different coats of arms, mostly coloured (many of the repeated arms in two documents left incomplete or uncoloured). Most of the loose documents are family trees, some with and some without coats of arms, mostly full sheets, but including large folding family trees assembled from 2, 6 or 10 sheets (the 2 largest 79.5 x 150 cm and 79.5 x 149 cm). With the German title below right in a cartouche, above a key to various postal services and 2 scales; the Latin title across the head, outside the border; and a large cartouche above left with a dedication to the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI, and his coat of arms flanked by three putti, one of them riding a winged horse. Large engraved wall map of Europe (121 x 166 cm), with the main map on 6 sheets (together 99.5 x 123.5 cm), 16 city profiles and bird's-eye views plus 2 city maps (Madrid & Moscow) down the sides, a letterpress description of Europe in Spanish at the foot (with 1 decorative woodcut initial), the Latin title in a panel on slips across the head of the entire assembly, and a decorative border at the sides. The main map has a second title "Europa" in a cartouche at its foot, with Europa sitting on Zeus in the form of a bull and other classical figures, putti and cattle; an inset map of one terrestrial hemisphere (centred on Europe and Africa); a large cartouche of drapery supported by putti with a note on the calculation of distances, illustrated with geodesic diagrams; another putto and an allegorical figure supporting the coat of arms of "Germania," with those of seven independent European kingdoms below it; 7 compass roses; and reticulated scales of latitude and longitude forming a border.
