Two etched print series showing the buildings and gardens of two of the greatest estates of the Low Countries, Anguien with a plan and 16 views (11 x 15 cm), designated with the letters A-R; Sorgvliet with 32 unnumbered views (11 x 15.5 cm). Manuscript in black and red ink on paper, with an armorial title-page, 2 folding family trees (each with a view), 1 overview and 18 detail maps and plans on 18 leaves, all but 1 folding, and 4 views on 2 folding leaves, the title-page, family trees, maps and views in colour. Further with 77 small coats of arms (numbered 1-78 with a space left blank for no. 67) in colour in the text. With an additional map and later manuscript note loosely inserted. Rebound in richly gold-tooled red morocco, printed decorative endpapers, gilt and gauffered edges, the whole in a contemporary tanned sheepskin box, lined with printed decorative paper. Contemporary richly gold-tooled red morocco (using one stamp from the so-called first "stadhouderlijke" bindery, but probably by a different binder just after the tools were dispersed in 1764), gold-tooled board edges, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Printed in red and black throughout, with Marchant's nearly full-page woodcut publisher's device (2 unicorns & "ILM") on the title-page, 12 nearly full-page woodcut illustrations for the months of the calendar, 44 full-page or nearly full-page woodcut illustrations plus 3 repeats (mostly 10 x 7 cm), 2 slightly smaller (7 x 5 cm) and about 34 much smaller (2.5 x 2 to 5 x 4 cm). 26 of the large blocks are signed "IM" for Jehan Le Marchant. Further with more than 100 decorative woodcut initials from several series (12-33 mm), hundreds of 1, 2 and 3-line uncial initials printed in red. Set in 2 textura types with many words or passages in red. Printed on vellum. Gold-tooled calf (ca. 1800), marbled endpapers, gilt edges. With the armorial bookplate of and a genealogical inscription by Edward Paston (ca. 1782-post 1826) of Norfolk, grandfather of the 7th Baronet Paston-Bedingfeld. Full description »

Further with 1 woodcut tailpiece (plus 1 repeat), 2 woodcut decorated initials (2 series) and decorations built up from 5 different cast fleurons. Set in roman type with incidental italic and Greek. Folio (30 x 19.5 cm). Title-page in red and black with a woodcut pictorial frame, about 125 woodcut illustrations plus about 15 repeats by Hans LÜTZENBURGER after Hans SCHÄUFELEIN and Urs GRAF (5 nearly full-page, plus 2 repeats), 2 woodcut decorative strips, numerous decorated uncial initial letters (3 series, 17-34 mm, with more than 1 block for some letters), and 2 series of plain uncial initials. With the main text in a bastarda (97 mm/20 lines) with opening words and running heads in a large textura. All woodcuts and a few initials coloured by an early hand. Slightly later (ca. 1565) blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, in a panel design with 3 rolls (1 with Reformation portraits and 1 with biblical figures), a rosette and a leaf, brass fastenings with engraved decoration. With a remarkable half-sheet letterpress bookplate of Johann Hartmann of Forccheim (Bavaria), dated 1581 and with an elaborate border built from Robert Granjon's arabesque fleurons (182 x 100 mm), giving a warning curse to ensure the book's return.
