(22), 763, (31) pp. Boekenoogen, Cat. Doopsgezinden, p. 199; OCLC WorldCat (10 copies); STCN (8 copies); Mennonite Encyclopedia II, p. 90.
Second edition of a Dutch Reformed attack against the Mennonites, first published in 1637: "the only scholarly work comparing the doctrines of the Calvinists with those of the Mennonites" (Mennonite Encyclopedia).
In 1626 the Alkmaar synod asked Austro-Sylvius (d. 1647) to write a book in response to the confession of faith published by the Mennonite preacher Jacques Outerman, which contained "blasphemous teachings." In 1627 it became clear that he couldn't do it alone, and Abraham à Doreslaer (1579-1655) was appointed to help. Once the outline of statements and counter statements had been approved by the synod committee, the two authors proceeded to work out the details of the comparison. The book includes extensive quotations from many extremely rare publications.
With an ownership inscription of the American Baptist theologian and Old Testament scholar, Howard Osgood (1831-1911), and the embossed stamp of the Rochester Theological Seminary. In very good condition and nearly untrimmed, giving generous margins, with only a few minor and mostly marginal water stains. Wrapper slightly tattered. Second edition of an extremely detailed comparison of the doctrines of the Calvinists and those of the Mennonites.
