(22); (8) lithographic prints. For the artists: Scheen, pp. 95, 231, 402, 550, 596.
A collection of lithographic views of sites in Amsterdam (with a binder's title: "Gezichten. van Amsterdam."), probably all published in the 1830s. Most were drawn by Abraham Vinkeles (1790-post 1864) (10 views), Hubertus (or Huib) van Hove Bartholomeusz. (1814-1864) (8 views) and J.B. Cleremans (active 1826-1839) (6 views), with 2 by Augustus Wijnantz (1795-post 1848), 2 by H. Pinte (active 1828-1829), who worked with Vinkeles, 1 by "Aiton" and 1 anonymous. The last eight views, by Van der Hove, form a clear series, printed and published by Collings & Van der Hout in Rotterdam, and the image database of the Amsterdam City Archives records all eight but no others in the series, dating them "1835." Although Van der Hove would then have been only twenty-one and did not complete his training until 1843, he did make drawings for other lithographs in 1836, and Collings and Van der Hout worked only to ca. 1840. All the other prints were printed and published by Desguerrois, and though they can be divided into several groups according to the style of the captions, borders, heading, etc., they all appear to date from the period ca. 1830 to ca. 1835. The first twelve (by Vinkeles and Pinte) form a clear series; the next eight (by Cleremans and Wijnantz) probably form a series, though there are three stylistic subgroups (and the paper of the group comprising the two Wijnantz prints is somewhat whiter); and the "Aiton" and the anonymous print are stylistically similar to each other. Most of the prints can be found in the image database of the Amsterdam City Archives, but we have not found the following six Desguerrois prints there or in Atlas van Stolk: "Wester Toren te Amsterdam" (A. Vinkeles ad viv del), "Entrepot-Dok"/ "Entrepôt" (Clermans [sic] invt en del), "Stads-Schouwburg"/"Théatre National" (Cleremans a.v.d.), "Logement de Oude Doelen ..."/"Hotel du Vieux Doelen. ..." (A. Wijnantz, fecit; Vos, lith.), "Gezigt van het Amsterdamsche Wapen Logement" (Aiton, a.v.d.) and "Gezigt van het groot Doel Logement" (anon.).
All thirty prints are on unwatermarked wove paper. Eight are somewhat foxed, but the rest are in good condition, with only minor (mostly marginal) foxing or an occasional spot. The binding is worn at the spine and corners. A collection of thirty Amsterdam lithographic views, six not found recorded.
