Reissue, with a new title-page of the third edition a standard manual of theoretical and applied mathematics. Abraham de Graaf (1635-ca. 1717) was one of the most prominent Dutch mathematicians. He had his own school in Amsterdam where he taught mathematics and navigation to ship pilots and navigating officers, and has many publications in these fields and those of astronomy and accountancy to his name. Christiaan Huygens corresponded with him.
In the present book, De Geheele Mathesis of Wiskonst, De Graaf gives a general introduction to theoretical and applied mathematics (astronomy, surveying, navigation, fortification, gnomonics, optics, mechanics). First published in Amsterdam in 1676, the third edition of 1708 was reissued twice in 1717, the present issue with only a cancel title-page (the other 1717 issue also has other preliminary leaves cancelled).
Although the margins are generous, the folding of the plates led to 3 being very slightly shaved. Otherwise in very good condition. Binding good, a bit dirty, with chip at the head of the spine and a compass-drawn figure on the front board. Owners' inscriptions of A. Boone (p.149) and N. Lanstwert (endpaper, dated 1824). A well-illustrated manual of mathematics.
