First edition of a study of ancient (mostly Greek and Roman) collars and necklaces, a rare example of the Amsterdam printer and publisher Jan Janssonius's Stockholm publications. It discusses the functions, decoration and manufacture of collars and necklaces, based on both historical sources and surviving examples. Janssonius set up his Stockholm shop by 1654. His device in the present book is a mirror-image copy of one he used at Amsterdam from at least 1639 (Rahir device M. 40). A second edition of the Torquibus appeared in 1707. Scheffer (1621-1679) was educated in his native Strasbourg, but moved to the court of Queen Christina of Sweden in 1648 and became a professor at the University of Uppsala, where he remained to his death.
In very good condition, with occasional underlining. A nice little book on ancient collars and necklaces, published by Janssonius's Stockholm office.
