A comprehensive and detailed rebuttal of the Jansenist Johan Christiaan van Erkel's anti-Jesuit Ruyme Zeden-Leer, van verscheyde aenzienelijke Paters Jezuye, getrouwelijk voorgesteld tot bescherming van de Catholijke kerk ("Keulen," "Balthazar van Egmond," 1688, probably also printed in the Netherlands). The rebuttal, called in the title a "sifting" of Van Erkel's book, goes systematically through every chapter, rebutting it point by point and citing the relevant page or even line. Herman Vis (1641-1731), a Dutch Jesuit Priest who wrote under the pseudonym Barent van Dryfland (and other names), wrote his rebuttal after Van Erkel's second volume appeared, stating that he had not thought it worth rebutting until Van Erkel's second volume presented the lack of reaction from the Jesuits as a triumph of his claims. Vis also published a pamphlet against the same book. The book was printed in the Netherlands, probably in Amsterdam, and it seems unlikely that it or even Van Erkel's book, was published by Van Egmond or at Cologne, a name and adress common in false imprints by Dutch publishers between 1666 and 1769.
A very good copy, with only some water stains in the gutter margin of the preliminaries. Binding rubbed. A comprehensive rebuttal of a virulent attack on the Jesuits.
