Rare and extensive bibliography of botanical literature by the distinguished Swiss botanist, anatomist, physiologist and poet, Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777). The titles have been arranged chronologically, from the Greeks to Linnaeus. The titles marked with an asterisk were found in Haller's private library.
"One of the eighteenth century's best bibliographical exhibits ... tremendously impressive in its erudition, its analyses of the contents of important volumes, its biographical notes, its useful though imperfect index, its attractive Zurich typography" (Hunt). "Throughout his scientific career, Haller thoroughly studied everything that had been published on any given subject; it is therefore natural that he turned his systematizing instincts toward bibliography" (DSB ).
All reference-works give as place of publication Zurich, whereas our copy has London on the title-page. Hunt describes a "Zurich-copy" but mentions the existence of copies with London on the title, "but the body of the work is identical".
Good copy, with some minor dampstains on the first and last leaves of both volumes. Binding also in good condition, with the edges slightly worn.
