Second edition of the first book on Sumatra, describing its foreign trading relations, geography, the Dutch trading places on the island and remarks on the English and Indian trade. It is the most reliable source on the island from that time, together with Marsden's History of Sumatra from 1784. The first edition was published in 1781 and the second edition originally appeared as a part of the Neue Sammlung von Reisebeschreibungen, but is here published with its own title-page.
Adolphe Eschels-Kroon, originally from Denmark, served the VOC for 18 years of which 8 at Sumatra's west coast. There he travelled through regions which only few Europeans had seen up to that time.
Good copy, slightly browned and foxed.
