First Dutch edition of the second half of Barros' account of the governorship of Nuno da Cunha in Goa. The Portuguese historian Joćo de Barros (1496-1570) has become famous for his history of the Portuguese in their oversees territories. His first volume was published in 1552, Asia de Ioam de Barros, dos fectos que os Portuguezes fizeram no descobrimento e conquista dos mares e terras do Oriente , and the second, third, and fourth Decada followed in 1555, 1563, and 1615. The Dutch publisher Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) included them in his series of travel accounts, Naaukeurige Versameling der Gedenkdwaardigste Zee en Land-Reysen na Oost en West-Indien... , which appeared in 28 volumes in 1706.
The Dutch version of de Barros' account of da Cunha's governorship takes up two volumes in the Dutch series. This is the second volume, covering the years from 1536 till da Cunha's death in 1539. The plates depict scenes described in the book, a.o. the killing of the Portuguese ambassadors to Malacca with boiling water by the king of Viantana and the dogs eating their bodies.
Good copy of this important document with accurate maps and attractive plates.
