RARE RUSSIAN BIRD BOOK, WITH 4 CHROMOLITHOGRAPHS OF SHRIKES

St Petersburg, Printing Office of the Imperial Academy, 1881. 2 volumes. 8vo (text) & small folio (atlas). With 4 numbered chromo-lithographic plates (image area 25 x 17.5 cm) drawn from nature by A. Sevastianoff and lithographed by Ivanson in St Petersburg, each with 2 or 3 birds and 1 also with an egg. Modern black cloth, decorated paper sides (text); near contemporary blocked beige cloth with the original printed front wrapper mounted on an endleaf (atlas).

Extremely rare Russian ornithological publication, with four finely chromolithographed ornithological plates showing seven spieces of shrikes and two subspieces, some showing both male and female and/or both mature and immature birds. One plate also shows an egg and another two separate feathers. We have located no complete copy in any of the standard collections. The atlas volume has a letterpress title-page. All of the letterpress in is Russian (set in cyrillic type); all texts in the plates are in the Latin alphabet, including a reference to the Memoires of the Imperial Academy of Sciences, VIIth series.
In very good condition, the atlas volume with a msall marginal tear in the title-page, minor foxing and a waterstain at the foot, just touching the tail of one bird. A rare ornithological item, with chomolithographs fo Russian shrikes.
