A small almanac for the Dutch Reformed market, with a woodcut portrait of the compiler on the title-page (with his age and coat of arms); a woodcut zodiac man; 4 woodcut signs for the phases of the moon; cast planet, aspect, (pictorial) zodiac and other almanac signs; and decorations built-up from cast arabesque fleurons. Printed in red and black throughout and set in textura types, sometimes using uncials as capitals. Late nineteenth or early twentieth-century half brown cloth, pseudo-marbled sides. With 2 folding engraved maps (each 8 x 9 cm) of France and of the area around Paris, and a decoration built-up from fleurons on the title-page. With historical texts about the countries of Europe and a wide variety of other information. With the twentieth-century morocco bookplate of Dominique Goytino. Contemporary binding richly embroidered in silver and gold thread, incorporating 2 original watercolour paintings, each in a painted gold frame in the centre of the front and back boards, gilt edges, pink silk paste-downs. With a letterpress general title-page, a full-page armorial engraving serving as a part-title to the main part covering Amsterdam, 4 letterpress part-titles (1 with a woodcut ship and each of the others with the same large woodcut tailpiece), several decorated woodcut initials (5 series) and cast interlaced initials, 2 woodcut headpieces (plus 1 repeat) and decorative bands built-up from arabesque fleurons. Set in textura types in 2 columns, with extensive roman and italic. Lithographed title-page with a gothic architectural frame and 30 (of 31?) lithographed portraits of ladies of the French court from the houses of Valois and Bourbon (in spite of the title, it includes court ladies to the end of the Ancien Régime) mounted on leaves of contemporary wove paper. Beautifully hand coloured, painted and highlighted with gum arabic, turning the prints almost into paintings. Half red calf, richly gold-tooled spine, marbled sides and endpapers (ca. 1900) with the binder's ticket of Gustaf Hedberg (1859-1912), royal bookbinder in Stockholm. With the large Estienne woodcut publisher's device on the title-page, 8 woodcut head- and tailpieces plus numerous repeats, and about 20 decorative woodcut initials (4 series, 1 including Greek) plus numerous repeats. Contemporary, richly blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, in a panel design (front and back board the same) with a panel-stamp portrait of Johann Freidrich II (1529-1595), Duke of Saxony (with monogram MB), and three rolls (1 with initials CS).
