INCORPORATING ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR PAINTINGS

Étrennes Mignones, Curieuses et Utiles, avec plusieurs augmentatons & corrections, pour l'année mil sept cent soixante-dix.
Paris, Pierre-François Durand (printed by Chardon), 1770 [= 1769?]. 32mo (9 x 5.5 cm; binding 9.4 x 6.0 cm). With 2 folding engraved maps (each 8 x 9 cm) of France and of the area around Paris, and a decoration built-up from fleurons on the title-page. With historical texts about the countries of Europe and a wide variety of other information. With the twentieth-century morocco bookplate of Dominique Goytino. Contemporary binding richly embroidered in silver and gold thread, incorporating 2 original watercolour paintings, each in a painted gold frame in the centre of the front and back boards, gilt edges, pink silk paste-downs. Preserved in a modern black half-morocco box with marbled sides and lining.

Europäischer Currier oder Geschichts-Calender auf das Jahr ... M. DCC. XXXXI. ...
Augsburg, "Vrechenmacherischen [sic] Erben" (= heirs of Caspar Brechenmacher), [1740]. 4to (20 x 15.5 cm). Almanac for the year 1741, with the title-page and calendar pages in red and black; a full-page woodcut scene of men on horseback arriving at an inn, with a battle scene in the background (the 1686 conquest of Buda?), a variant title on a panel below left and a cockerel as inn sign, alluding to the author's name; and a woodcut zodiac-man (for bloodletting). Further with zodiac, planet and other almanac signs, and decorations built up from fleurons. Contemporary boards, covered with red paper, panel-stamped in gold with the title; 2 biblical scenes and 4 other figures; and 27 coat-of-arms, namely 12 of the Holy Roman Empire and its dominions, 7 of cities in Upper Austria, and 4 (each repeated) mostly of provinces in western Slovenia.

[Colophon:] Zwolle, Peter van Os, 27 May 1495. Folio (27.5 x 20.5 cm). Sermons, translated from the Latin into Dutch, with a full-page woodcut on the title-page (with the letterpress title above it) showing Mary and Jesus appearing before the author, a full-page woodcut of the Annunciation, a full-page woodcut of Jesus at the end ("speciosus forma pre filys homi[num]" Psalm 45:3), 17 smaller woodcut illustrations plus 1 repeat (mostly 10.5 x 8 & 7.5 x 6 cm) in the text (6 flanked by any 2 of 6 woodcut decorative strips), and the woodcut armorial device of the printer-publisher (plus 1 repeat). Set in textura types. With 2 large blue manuscript uncial initials with interior decoration left white and red penwork decoration, numerous uncial initials in red or blue (a few with interior decoration left white), rubricated throughout. Contemporary black calf, blind-tooled in a panel design, over (modern) wooden boards, 2 brass catchplates (clasps lacking).

Jesu Christi D.N. Novum Testamentum, sive Novum Foedus.
(Geneva), (Henri Estienne), 1582. Folio (34.5 x 22 cm). Text in 3 parallel columns giving De Bèze's Greek text, his Latin translation from the Greek, and the Latin Vulgate, with extensive commentary at the head and foot. With the large Estienne woodcut publisher's device on the title-page, 8 woodcut head- and tailpieces plus numerous repeats, and about 20 decorative woodcut initials (4 series, 1 including Greek) plus numerous repeats. Contemporary, richly blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, in a panel design (front and back board the same) with a panel-stamp portrait of Johann Freidrich II (1529-1595), Duke of Saxony (with monogram MB), and three rolls (1 with initials CS). With a 1780 owner's inscription of Johan Heinrich Wepler and earlier and later indications of provenance.

Nineteenth-century tortoise-shell, each board with a relief architectural panel in a neo-gothic style, spine with decorations engraved in the tortoise-shell, gilt silver and gold-filigree fittings (2 clasps with catchplates and 4 corner-pieces), silver hinges, gilt edges (with a gauffered decoration near the blue and white headbands), green coated and textured endpapers, 2 brown silk ribbon markers. With a presentation inscription from Queen Mary of England (1867-1953), wife of King George V (1865-1936), dated 1930, written on a Buckingham Palace letterhead and pasted to the endpapers.

With 76 engraved caricature plates (16 x 10.5 cm, 58 with 1 figure and 18 with 2 figures), and 2 engraved contents leaves (for parts 1 and 2), with the contents described in verse (2 lines for each plate). The title appears at the head of the contents for part 1. French red goatskin morocco (ca. 1860) by C. HARDY, gold-tooled turn-ins, marbled end-papers, headbands in green, white and brown, green ribbon marker, marbled and gilt edges.
