€ 5,000

Manuscript map of the Hooghly River in India, between Bansberia in the south at the joining with the Damodar River, and Kulpi in the north, passing Kolkata (Calcutta) in the state of West Bengal. Drawn in ink and finely watercoloured in green, red and brown. The map is highly detailed with cities and towns, infrastructure, and natural features such as marshes, woods and lakes. The map is drawn with north to the left. The title at the head reads: Carte d'une partie du cours de la riviere d'Hoogly et des environs de Calcutta. Nota. Cette carte est copiée d'après une carte Angloise imprimée en 1781, which translates to: "Map of a part of the Hooghly River and the surroundings of Kolkata. After an English map printed in 1781". The map that is referred to is likely from the Bengal atlas by James Rennell, printed in Kolkata 1781, but in fact the present map shows several details not included in that map. Perhaps it also made use of a three-part survey map in manuscript by Mark Wood, now in the British Library's King George III's Topographical collection. Although the BL dates this map 1785, Wood oversaw the survey of the river between 1780 and 1785, so he could have begun work on his map in 1781. The level of detail in the present French copy is closer to the Wood drawing than the Rennell print. The new Fort William that was finished in 1781 is present on the drawing. The map by Wood was made as part of the administration of India by the East India Company and Wood gave it to King George III.
In very good condition. Repair to small hole in the lower left corner.
