First separately published edition of an encyclopedia of games (mainly board and parlour games, but also including some outdoor sports and ball games). The plates, engraved by P. Scattaglia, show board games like chess, dominoes, different games of goose, strategic war games, card games, etc., but also billiards. Alphabetically arranged, it describes some eighty games with all their rules and special terminology.
It is based on the volume devoted to games in Panckouckes Encyclopédie méthodique, an enormous encyclopedia devoted to various subjects, published mostly from 1792 to 1823. The encyclopedia volume, edited by Jacques Lacombe, also included conjuring tricks and scientific and mathematical games, which are left out in the present publication.
