First edition of one of the most significant early treatises on South American zoology, which was highly regarded by Charles Darwin. The text is organised into chapters, each devoted to a different species, including tapirs, jaguars, ocelots, and chameleons, usually identifying them by their local Guaraní name. Of particular importance are the authors observations on the introduction and acclimatisation of European quadrupeds in the Americas. His detailed accounts of the reproduction and proliferation of cattle and horses in the wild are especially noteworthy, offering early insights into the ethnological, economic, and sociological implications.
The spines are slightly discoloured, the boards are very lightly rubbed. Occasional mild foxing. Otherwise in very good condition. Muller, America 1171; Nissen, ZBI 175; Palau 20971; Sabin 2537; Wood p. 214.
