Fine plate book illustrated with a steel-engraved frontispiece, 60 full-page steel engravings, and a steel-engraved tail-piece. Each plate is accompanied by descriptive text in both English and French and is issued in 2 different versions, offering alternate impressions of the views.
The plates depict a wide range of picturesque landscapes, towns, architectural monuments, and historical sites along the Rhine, in Belgium, and in Holland, including Heidelberg Palace, Frankfurt, Mainz Cathedral, Bacharach, the ruins of Andernach, Cologne Cathedral, the Ghent Gate at Bruges, Utrecht, the Palace at The Hague, and the Westerkerk in Amsterdam.
All illustrations are based on original drawings by Robert Batty (1789-1848), an army officer, draughtsman, and etcher, whose topographical works were highly regarded for their accuracy and artistic quality. This beautifully produced volume forms part of the early 19th-century tradition of illustrated travel books, combining historical interest with the romantic appeal of European scenery.
With the bookplate of Francis Gray Stuart on upper pastedown. Binding a little worn around the edges, slighty foxed throughout. Otherwise in very good condition. Bodel Nijenhuis 256 (Views on the Rhine, in Belgium and Holland. London, 1825).
