€ 500
First Gryphe edition of Cicero's letters, based on the edition published by Aldus Manutius in Venice in 1513 and retaining Aldus's original preface. The text is accompanied by the commentary of Erasmus and other humanist scholars, and is finely printed in a small italic type with roman headings.
Cicero's correspondence, comprising more than 900 surviving letters, provides a unique insight into the political, intellectual, and private life of the late Roman Republic. During the Renaissance the letters became essential reading for the study of Latin prose and rhetoric, and editions such as the present one played an important role in their dissemination.
With two small shelfmark labels on the front pastedown and some occasional contemporary manuscript annotations in the margins. The vellum is somewhat stained and scratched. The leaves are lightly browned, the top margin has been trimmed somewhat short, but without loss of text. Overall in good condition. Adams G 1912; Baudrier, Bibliographie Lyonnaise, VIII, p. 97; BM STC French p. 109; USTC 122281 (6 copies).
