First Dutch edition of Crawfurd's major History of the Indian Archipelago, with a preface by the translator, Pieter de Haan. Crawfurd was part of the British expedition to Java in 1811 and held several senior post during the British occupation of the island. He befriended Javanese aristocratic literati and studied both Javanese and ancient Kawi, thus acquiring an intimate knowledge of Indonesian culture. The present work is an in depth account of the archipelago, more specifically of Java, treating its native population, agriculture, sciences and arts, languages, religions, history and legislation. The coloured plate shows a Papuan boy and a native from Bali. The accurate map is by John Walker and includes the Philippines.
