Rare Lisbon printing, after the elusive first edition printed in Goa (1641), of a speech given in Goa in October 1640, on the occasion of the formal recognition of the new King of Portugal, João IV and his son and heir Prince Teodósio. The speech was delivered by the distinguished Dominican Friar and theologian Fr. Manoel da Cruz. His dates of birth and death are unknown; Innocencio mentions the date (7 March 1598) he professed his vows into the order and evidently he was still alive in 1641 to deliver the speech presented in the present publication. Da Cruz served as Vicar General for the Dominicans in India and was a deputy of the Portuguese Inquisition in Goa. Furthermore, Da Cruz was "chaplain to the Viceroy of India, the Conde da Silva Tello e Meneses, to whom this publication is dedicated" (Maggs Bros., London. Bibliotheca Asiatica et Africana Part IV, Catalogue No. 519, 401). The present work is described in the work of Azervedo-Samodães as follows: "Clássico. Interessante e estimada. Multo rara", while Palha also calls for the incredibly rare (practically unrecorded) first edition: "Réimpression de ce discours estimé. La première édition a paru à Goa, 1641".
Second edition. Rare Lisbon printing of an address given in Goa in October, 1641 by the Dominican Vicar-General of India, Manuel da Cruz, to mark the acclamation of the new King of Portugal, João IV, and the end of sixty years of Spanish rule.
With the small ex libris book plate of H.P. Kraus and a cutting from the 1929 Maggs Bros. catalogue mounted on the front pastedown and with contemporary annotations in brown ink on the title page and in the text and blank margins (including early manuscript pagination). The binding shows minor signs of wear, the edges of the leaves are slightly fayed and browned, occasional slight foxing in the margins. Otherwise in very good condition.
