Richly illustrated scientific work written by Adolf von Koenen (1837-1915), which deals with the mollusks of the Lower Oligocene in northern Germany. It was published by the Royal Prussian Geological Survey as a part of the Abhandlungen zur geologischen Specialkarte von Preussen und den Thüringischen Staaten. Band X, Heft 1-7. The work examines various families of marine gastropods, including Strombidae, Muricidae, Buccinidae, Naticidae, Pyramidellidae, Eulimidae, Cerithidae, and Turritellidae. The work is divided into several volumes and contains detailed descriptions and illustrations of the mollusk species. It is an important source for research into the paleontology of the North German Lower Oligocene and the evolution of mollusks in this region.
Von Koenen was a German geologist, who is best remembered for his paleontological research of northern Germany. He received his education in Berlin, and following study trips through Belgium, England and France, he obtained his habilitation (highest university degree) at the University of Marburg in 1867. In 1878 he became a full professor at Marburg, then relocated to the University of Göttingen in 1881 as a professor of geology. At Göttingen, one of his better known students was mineralogist Friedrich Rinne.
With some pencil annotations in the text and a purple owner's stamp (initials "ME") on each title page. The wrappers of the volumes show some signs of wear, mainly around the spines. The spine of volume 1 has split nearly in the middle (between the main text and the plates). A few plates are slightly browned. Otherwise in good condition. BMNH II, 1007.
