Rare complete set of one of the finest series of views of the Netherlands of the 18th century. The work provides nearly 850 views of Dutch towns, and is therefore one of the largest illustrated topographical works that was published in the Netherlands at the time. The present set includes the very rare tenth part, which is nearly always missing, making complete sets exceptionally rare. We have only been able to trace three complete copies in sales records of the past hundred years, and the Dutch short title catalogue (STCN), has recorded only two in institutions. The first nine parts of the work were published by Isaak Tirion (ca. 1705-1765) and his wife between 1745 and 1774. It was produced to compliment the 23-volume Tegenwoordige staat der vereenigde Nederlanden (1739-1795), which contained descriptions of the whole country, but relatively few illustrations. Tirion himself published volume 1 to 6 between 1745 and 1757. Several years after his death, between 1773 and 1774, his widow published volume 7 to 9. The 10th part, Het verheerlykt Kleefschland, was subsequently produced by several other publishers to supplement Het verheerlykt Nederland, and contains another 91 views.
Each volume is dedicated to an individual province or region, but three are dedicated to Utrecht only. After Tirion's death, the original plan to depict every region individually was changed. The work contains plates and views of buildings and scenery in the provinces of Noord-Holland, Gelderland, Rijnland, Delfland, Zuid-Holland, Zeeland, and Utrecht. The 843 beautiful views were made by some of the most famous Dutch artists of the time: Hendrik Spilman, Hendrik de Winter, A. van Swyndrecht, A. van Broekhuizen, Cornelis Pronk, Abraham de Haan, and Jan de Beijer. With a brown paper shelf mark label mounted at the head of the spine of the first volume ("58"). The edges and corners of the boards are somewhat scuffed, the boards are slightly rubbed, lacking a small chip of leather at the foot of the spine of the second volume. Some of the title-pages are browned, but otherwise internally very clean, with only an occasional stain. Overall in very good condition. Ad 1: STCN 204508606 (24 copies, of which 15 incomplete); Tiele 1034; ad 2: STCN 316060445 (2 copies).
