Original watercolour with a view of Sulzburg in southern Germany, drawn in 1797 by an unidentified French officer serving with the Army of Condé. The town is shown in its mountainous surroundings, with houses, inhabitants, and soldiers in the foreground. In the extensive manuscript caption, the artist records that after leaving the positions on the Rhine he was sent to Sulzburg with his division of "chasseurs nobles". He also remarks that the town was then inhabited largely by Jews, whom he describes as having taken refuge there after the French destroyed the Jewish quarter of Breisach. The watercolour belongs to a series of eyewitness drawings recording his travels and experiences with the Army of Condé in 1795-1797.
With the manuscript number "No 139" on the verso. The work was likely taken from an album, as remnants of blue paper remain on the verso. The work is lightly browned. Otherwise in good condition.
