Two original watercolours of Great Yarmouth, drawn in December 1797 by an unidentified French officer during his travels through England, the Netherlands and Germany. The first gives a broad view across the harbour towards the town, crowded with sailing vessels, and records the artist's arrival at Yarmouth on the morning of 6 December 1797. The second shows the busy quayside and the bridge across the Yare, with numerous moored vessels, figures, carts and horse-drawn carriages. In his extensive manuscript caption the artist explains that the bridge opened in the middle to allow ships to pass, and records details of his journey and stay at Yarmouth. The two sheets form part of the extensive numbered series in which the artist documented his travels during the 1790s.
With manuscript numbers on the verso ("No. 191" and "No 192"), and remnants of a blue paper mount. Both works are slightly stained. Otherwise in good condition.
