Rare first edition of a fiercely polemical Lutheran tract by the influential theologian and Reformer Jakob Andreae (1528-1590), professor and later chancellor of the University of Tübingen. The work forms part of the intense confessional controversies of the late 16th century, targeting Calvinist theology and defending the doctrines of the Augsburg Confession, particularly with regard to Christology and the doctrine of the Eucharist.
Andreae was a central figure in the consolidation of Lutheran orthodoxy in Germany and played a leading role in the formulation of the Formula of Concord (1577), one of the defining doctrinal standards of Lutheranism. His writings are characterised by vigorous polemic and doctrinal precision, and this work is no exception, reflecting the heated theological disputes between Lutheran and Reformed traditions in the post-Reformation period.
The work was printed in Tübingen by Georg Gruppenbach, an important Württemberg printer and publisher whose press published numerous significant Lutheran theological and ecclesiastical works in the late 16th century. Gruppenbach was closely associated with leading scholars of the University of Tübingen and played a major role in disseminating Reformation-era scholarship.
With an "H" written on the title page in red pencil, occasional later annotations and manicules in the margins. The binding is in very good condition. The work is browned throughout, the head margin has been trimmed, but without loss of text. Otherwise in good condition.
