The second Amsterdam edition, in the original Latin, of the famous pharmacopoeia of the Royal College of Physicians at London, first published in 1618 as Pharmacopoeia Londinensis, the present edition based on the extensively revised London edition published in the summer of 1746 (in 4to format, sometimes called the fifth "edition" but better called the fifth "recension": there were many editions in between those five, mostly in smaller formats). By decree of the King all pharmacologists in England were obliged to work following the prescriptions in this book, which gained authority not only in Great Britain, but also in large parts of the continent.
The 1721 London edition had been quickly copied by an Amsterdam edition of 1722, and the present edition, printed in Amsterdam, directly copies the 1746 London edition. The layout of the imprint and its wording ("Juxta postremam renovationem edita ...", with the undated Amsterdam imprint below the 1746 London imprint) suggest that its 1746 London imprint is a copy imprint, so Tirion did not print it for or share publication with the London booksellers named, and it has correctly been regarded as an undated edition. But Tirion did in fact announce its publication in November 1746, a few months after the London edition appeared (Maandelyke uittreksels). The Frankfurt editions of 1748 and 1751 appear to copy Tirions.
Somewhat worn around the edges, some stains, especially on the endpapers, otherwise in good condition. Blake, p. 349; Maandelyke uittreksels, of Boekzaal der geleerde waerelt, 63 (1746/47: no. [5], November 1746), pp. 586-587; STCN (3 copies); Wellcome IV, p. 363.
