Rare first edition of the Dutch translation of John Carr's travels round the Baltic, through Denmark, Sweden, Russia, Prussia and part of Germany, in the year 1804. Sir John Carr (1772-1832) was an English barrister, illustrator, poet and traveller. ''He was called to the bar at the Middle Temple, but from reasons of health found it advisable to travel, and published accounts of his journeys in different European countries, which though without much intrinsic merit, obtained a wide circulation on account of their light, gossipy style, and the fact that in the species of literature there was then comparatively little competition'' (DNB). He started his travels to the north of Europe in 1804 and describes the different cities he visited and the people he meets, with remarks on their hospitality and their eating habits, describing, for example, "a Swedish meal".
From the library of the Swedish bibliophile and collector Gustaf Bernström (1877-1966). Only a few minor spots or stains, otherwise in very good condition, and virtually untrimmed, leaving most deckles intact. DNB IX, pp. 170-171; Muller, Bibl. Neerlando-Russe 770; WorldCat (6 copies),
