Collection of documents concerning the Brazilian jurist Bazilio Teixeira Cardozo de Sávedra Freire (ca. 1780 or earlier-1823 or later). He came to Brazil from Tarouca (about 60 km east of Porto in Portugal) around 1800 and the Prince Regent (the future King João VI) appointed him head of the post office at Sabará (in Minas Gerais) in 1802. He soon became a judge in Bahia and strongly advocated the expulsion of the "heathen" indigenous population from their lands to further Portuguese interests, particularly the Botocudo along the banks of the Doce River in the eastern Sertão, where the Prince Regent hoped to benefit from the mineral and agricultural wealth and the river commerce. Ironically, as the Portuguese colonists were driving the Botocudo from their lands the Prince Regent had to flee Napoleon's armies in 1807 and set up his court in Rio de Janeiro in 1808. He clearly appreciated Freire's efforts, granting him a knighthood and titles in the military Order of Christ in the present three documents of 1808 (each dated 9 October 1808 on its first page) and later other honours. Freire was still a judge at Bahia (apparently also in Rio das Velhas in Minas Geraes) in 1815 but was back in Tarouca in 1817 and served as judge in Porto in from 1818 to at least 1823.
In very good condition.
