One of the earliest (fourth?) and rarest editions, with a false imprint (but probably the second edition by the original publisher), of an infamous collection of memoires or reputed memoires from the reign of King Henri III of France, and an uncommonly ferocious satire of the manners and mores of the court and especially of Henri III and his mother Catherine de Medici, including rather sordid details.
Jean Elzevier in Leiden produced the first edition in 1660, using for the first time the false imprint "Cologne, Pierre Marteau" to hide his own identity and that of the author(s) of this "chronique scandaleuse". This and the other editions discussed here are in 12mo format and the others copy "Cologne" and "Pierre Marteau" from the false imprint of the first edition.
The present edition is not in Willems or Rahir and we have located only 7 other copies, rarer than the other 1662 "Marteau" edition. Some of the references listed below give insufficient detail to distinguish the two.
In very good condition. Barbier 64? (no collation); Berghman, Nouvelles études ... Elzevirienne (1897), p. 25? (not seen); Brandt, Verhaal van de Reformatie (Amsterdam, Jan Rieuwertsz. 1663), 3F6v? (no collation); STCN 229326897 (1 copy): cf. 205270441 (1 copy of the other 1662 "Marteau" ed.); WorldCat 64419476, 311457465, 559617325 (together 5 copies); cf. Léonce Janmart de Brouillant, Histoire de Pierre du Marteau (1888), item V (p. 179: the other 1662 "Marteau" ed.); Rahir 866, 1360, 2162, 2209, 2210 (1660 & 1663 "Marteau" eds.); Willems, Les Elzeviers 868 (the other 1662 "Marteau" ed.).
