Remarkable collection of nine contemporary watercolours recording the campaigns of the French émigré Army of Condé along the Rhine in 1795-1797, likely drawn by an unidentified officer serving with the army. The watercolours depict camps, inspections, troop movements and battles in Germany and France, including the camp at Steinstadt, the crossing of the Rhine at Kehl, the Battle of Schliengen, and the attack on the bridgehead at Huningue. The handwritten captions, which relate the events in first person, strongly suggest that the scenes were drawn from direct observation.
The captions provide a detailed personal record of the artist's service with Condé's army. He describes taking part in military operations, receiving orders, and being charged by the Prince de Condé with carrying out inspections of the Hohenlohe Regiment and the infantry and cavalry of Roger de Damas's Legion. The final watercolour, dated 10 October 1797, depicts his departure from his quarters at Winterspieren in a horse-drawn carriage. Together, the nine drawings offer a unique insight into the activities of the French émigré army during the campaigns on the Rhine.
All drawings are numbered on the verso in a contemporary hand, they were likely taken from an album, as remnants of blue paper remain on the verso. Drawing 135 with a stain at the top, drawing 142 with a torn upper left corner and a small tear in the lower margin. Otherwise in good condition.
