First French edition of a famous work on the history and increasement of trees, bushes, and flowers, divided in two parts. The work was highly successful because the author claimed to have found a new way to multiply trees. The chapters discuss the nourishment and soil needed for trees, and the ancient practises as well as various "modern" methods which were applied for the increasement of trees, bushes, and flowers. Both parts of the work are illustrated with 17 folding engraved plates, depicting leaves, the growth of peaches, and gardening tools.
With a later ownership annotation on the first free flyleaf ("Felix Vindevogel"), and a contemporary inscription at the end of the second part ("à l'usage de frere Godefroi Bouvart. Bibliothequaire de S. Bern. 1723."). The boards and spine are rubbed, the front joint has broken, but the structural integrity of the binding is still intact, a few small water stains on the boards. The leaves are lightly browned. Otherwise in good condition. Cat. Plesch Collection p. 123; Hunt II, 452; STCN 30308989X (6 copies); cf. Mc. Donald, Agricultural writers, 1721 (English ed.); not in Cat. natura artis magistra; Nissen; Pritzel.
