€ 2,750
First and only edition on the life and work of the first Roman Catholic missionaries in Friesland, the Netherlands, in an unusual contemporary armorial binding, with the arms of Jean Baptiste Daneels (?-1659), the first Baron of Attenrode, Wever, and Corbeeck-over-Loo, in Flanders. The work was written by Willibrord Bosschaerts (1577-1657), a Premonstratensian monk at Tongerlo, and was the result of both profound scientific research and a shrewd mind, according to Knuttel. In the preliminaries a letter is present, addressed by Erycius Puteanus to the Abbot of Bosschaerts' monastery, and at the end a genealogy of the Bishops of Utrecht, parallel with a genealogy of the Counts of Holland, is added, together with a hymn to the author by Cornelius Musius, and some epigrams, by J. van Westerlaken. The work is rare on the market, as we have only been able to trace two other copies in sales records of the past hundred years.
The work has been rebacked, with the original spine laid down, the edges and corners of the boards are somewhat scuffed, the spine and boards are somewhat rubbed, with a few small losses of the gold tooling, lacking the closing ties. Some of the leaves are browned. Otherwise in good condition. Bib. Catholica Neerlandica impressa 10421; Goovaerts, Écrivains, artistes et savants de l'ordre de Prémontré I, 77; Knuttel, Ned.
