Very rare Amsterdam printing of the second improved and enlarged edition of this encyclopedic manual on all aspects of horticulture, including fruit- and kitchen-gardens, as well as the cultivation of medicinal plants and herbs by Johann Hermann Knoop (ca. 1700-1769). The various trees, plants and herbs are treated alphabetically, and at the end of the second part, devoted to the cultivation of flowers, a gardener's calendar is added. The third part, treating the medicinal plants, virtually present a popular pharmacopeia. The author, who was head gardener at the estate Marienburg near Leeuwarden, later reworked the first part, on fruit-trees, shrubs, and kitchen-gardens, into the famous coloured plates book "Pomologia, Fructologia", published in 4 volumes in the 1770s.
The volumes have been re-backed with modern paper, the marbled paper sides are slightly rubbed. The first volume is very slightly browned, volume 2 shows some light water stains in the outer and bottom margins (not affecting the text), volume 3 is slightly browned throughout and shows some water stains in the margins (slightly affecting the text). Otherwise in good condition. A very rare edition of a notable work on horticulture. Molhuysen-Blok III, 706; cf. STCN 244748756 (Leeuwarden ed.) and 155345443 (Harlingen & Amsterdam ed.); not in BMNH; Jackson; Pritzel.
