Extremely rare first edition of an account of the famous battle near Nieuwpoort on the Flemish coast, one of the few open field battles of the Eighty Years' War. It was fought on the 2nd of July 1600 during the military campaign under the command of the Dutch stadtholder Maurits of Orange (1567-1625), and was the first major victory of the Dutch army over the Spanish forces on foreign soil, which was a turning point for the Dutch chances in the war. The author, Arnoldus Neomagus (ca. 1550-after 1626), was a Remonstrant preacher, who dedicated the work to Maurits and the States General. His dedication is dated March 1615. A second edition was published by Joannes le Maire at Leiden in 1617.
With the oval blind stamp of the Theological Institute of Connecticut on the first and last few leaves. The vellum is somewhat stained. The sewing supports are broken at the front hinge, showing the manuscript waste used for the spine, but the structural integrity of the binding is still intact. Otherwise in good condition. Van der Aa 13; Petit 742; Huisstede & Brandhorst 469; STCN 831481129 (5 copies, of which 1 incomplete); USTC 1027020 (4 copies); cf. Simoni N18 (second ed.).
