Large paper copy of the first edition of a strikingly illustrated work on edible and poisonous mushrooms by Joseph R. Roques (1772-1850), a French botanist and physician. The present work shows different mushrooms and their uses. Notably, the last plate (nr. 24) shows the truffle and on pages 153-167 in the text part, recipes of different truffle dishes are explained, such as, ragoût de truffles, truffles au naturel, au vin de Champagne, a L'italienne, à la piémontaise, pouding aux truffles, ratafia de truffles, truffles du Piémont à la Rossini.
With the armorial bookplate of Paul de Vancelle on the front pastedown. The binding is very slightly soiled, occasionally slightly foxed in the margins, the plates are very slightly browned without affecting the clarity and brightness of the handcoloured illustrations. Overall in good condition. Nissen BBI1672; Stafleu & Cowan 9498; Vicaire 749.
