The 1644 St. Gallen edition of Nicolaus Hug Landenburgers German translation (first edition 1566) of a very popular devotional work: one of the best-known works by Reinier Snoy (1477-1537), from Gouda, namely his famous paraphrase of the Psalms, Psalterium Davidicum paraphrasibus brevibus illustrata, first published in Latin by Michiel Hillen van Hoochstraten at Antwerp in 1535. His paraphrase was translated into various languages and new editions continued to appear far into the 18th century.
Snoy matriculated at Louvain in 1496, and subsequently went to Bologna where he was awarded a medical doctorate. After his return to Holland he became physician to Adolph of Burgundy, Lord of Veere. He was introduced to Charles V, who sent him on various diplomatic missions to Denmark, Scotland and elsewhere. After having practiced medicine for some time in England he returned to his native Gouda to devote his further life to the study of theology. Belonging to the circle around Erasmus, who praised him as the "alterum literarum Hollandicarum decus".
With old manuscript owner's inscriptions on the title-page, and on the front paste-down the ca. 1900 cancelled shelf-mark label of the Stiftsbibliothek St. Gallen and the later small round library stamp of the "Encyclopedie Benedictine",With occasional minor (mostly marginal) browning and a few fingerprints, but otherwise internally in fine condition. Binding restored, most of its original tooling worn off.
