First edition of the biography of the famous abbess and reformer of Port-Royal, Mother Angélique de Sainte Magdelaine Arnauld (1591-1661) and notes on the history of Port-Royal, Maubuisson and other monasteries by her niece Angélique de Saint Jean Arnauld d'Andilly (1624-1684). Together with notes on her own life and the events at Port-Royal during the years she was abbess there.
Angélique de Sainte Magdelaine Arnauld is famous for having reformed the Abbey of Port-Royal and other Cistercian abbeys such as Maubuisson in such a way that her monastery, of which she was abbess from an early age on, could become the centre of Jansenism in France. The many difficulties and even prosecutions which were the result of these reforms, are described in a very lively manner. These accounts form a very important source for the history of Port-Royal, frequently cited by the historiographer of the reform movement of Port-Royal, Sainte-Beuve. Blaise Pascal was one of her admirers.
With an owner's inscription (Petri Dupré, 1770) and a library stamp of the Paters Assumptionists (Heide Huis) at Nijmegen. A good copy.
