Rare original edition of a treatise on the perspective of shadows and the theory of reflection, written for the benefit of artists and students at schools of design. François Étienne Victor de Clinchamp (1787-ca. 1850) was raised to join the navy, and for that purpose his father taught him mathematics. Poor health, however, prevented him from pursuing this path, and he instead studied painting in Paris under De Barbier the Elder, Peyron, and Girodet.
With a contemporary French annotation on the half-title. The boards are somewhat rubbed and scratched, with some loss of material around the edges and corners. The leaves are occasionally stained and foxed. Otherwise in good condition.
