€ 1,250
Satirical and humoristic compilation written in German describing the several tricks, frauds and deceits performed by all kinds of persons and professions, together with methods on how best to avoid them and not becoming the victim of their contrived behaviour. The work is written by Georg Paul Hönn (1662-1747), a German jurist, archivist and author. His Betrugslexicon is his most known work. In this work, he shows the most common tricks of more "deceiting" persons as pick-pockets, charlatans and the often prejudged beggars. However, Hönn also describes the sham of more renowned professions in the 18th-century, such as apothecaries, barbers, soldiers, brewers and mayors. Also the clergy is accused of swindling by Hönn as he discusses the frauds of nuns and monks. Also the deceit bibliothecaries, bookbinders and paper makers cannot be overlooked, according to Hönn.
With an owner's inscription written in black ink on the front paste-down and on the first free endpaper, another owner's inscription with blue pencil on the first free endpaper and another owner's inscription on the verso of the title-page. Also with a newspaper clipping from the Preussiche Zeitung, Berlin, 27 August 1859, pasted to the front paste-down, testifying the rarity of the book. Binding worn, especially around the spine, bottom of spine lost and remnants loose, hinges a little weak, a few small stains and a little browning on the endpapers, but otherwise in good condition.
