Rare first edition of a specialist work on currants and gooseberries by Claude Antoine Thory (1759-1827). With a description of the characteristics of various species and their growing, together with recipes on ice cream, jams, syrups, wines, conserves etc. Thory was a French writer, naturalist, and collector of roses, who mainly is known for having written the descriptive text for Pierre-Joseph Redouté's excellent illustrations of roses (Les Roses, décrites et classées selon leur ordre naturel).
The wrappers are slightly dust soiled and are slightly damaged around the corners and the head and foot of the spine, somewhat foxed throughout. Otherwise in good condition. Nissen BBI 1958; Plesch 433; Pritzel 9247; Vicaire 834 (without colouring).
