Contemporary calf, blind ruled along the edges, with a gold-tooled oval centerpiece: the stamp of "The society of writers to the signet" lettered around its coat of arms (this society is also known as the "WS Society", a prestigious, private association of Scottish solicitors dating back to 1594, and based in Edinburgh. The society maintains the Signet Library, Parliament House, Edinburgh); red painted edges. Re-backed: 20th-century gold-tooled spine with a (the original?) red morocco title-label lettered in gold.
